What is Child Parent Relationship Therapy?
Child Parent Relationship Therapy is a Filial Therapy model, delivered over 10 sessions to parent/carers. Unlike many 'parenting programmes' that focus on problematic behaviours and discipline techniques, Child Parent Relationship Therapy focuses upon enhancing the child-parent attachment relationship and communicating using play as children's primary language.
In Child Parent Relationship Therapy, parent/carers are taught non-directive play skills to use with their child at home for just 30 minutes each week during special structured play times. Using a kit of carefully selected toys, parent/carers can help their child express themselves through play, as the child leads and the parent/carer follows. Parent/carers learn how to communicate through play, respond empathically to their child's feelings, build their child's self-esteem, help their child learn self-control and self-responsibility, and to set therapeutic limits within the play times.
