What is Creative Clinical Supervision?
Clinical Supervision is a collaborative process of education, support and management of therapists' work to ensure safe and ethical practice for the therapist and the clients they work with. Clinical Supervision aims to be a safe, contained and non-judgemental, yet gently challenging space where therapists can share and explore their clinical work and practice issues. Clinical Supervision can be used to address many aspects of a therapists' work and professional development, including therapeutic skills, techniques or interventions, the therapeutic relationship, challenges or ethical dilemmas, or aspects of the therapeutic work that impact the therapist both professionally and personally.
Creative Clinical Supervision incorporates play and creativity as a fundamental part of supervision, as the supervisory space parallels the therapy space and therapists express and explore in supervision using the language of the client. Playfulness and creativity in supervision builds upon the safe supervisory relationship and supports the integration of both left- and right-brain processes to enhance therapists' learning, to provide a 'felt sense' of their clients' process, to gain greater clarity and insight, and to address transference and countertransference dynamics. Creative materials used in Supervision include, but are not limited to, sand and symbols, art materials, playdough/clay, Russian Dolls, picture cards, and storytelling. **No artistic or creative ability is needed to access and benefit from Creative Clinical Supervision.
Clinical Supervision is an essential aspect of working therapeutically with children and adults alike to uphold professional standards and ensure safe and ethical practice. Regular Clinical Supervision is compulsory for trainee therapists and counsellors, as well as qualified and experienced therapists, counsellors, and supervisors, with Professional and Governing Bodies setting the minimum ratios of monthly supervision requirements for members. Creative Clinical Supervision can also enhance the work of other professionals in helping and support roles.
